Immunofixation Serum Protein

Immunofixation Serum Protein Test is a laboratory test used to detect and identify abnormal proteins in the blood, known as monoclonal proteins or M-proteins. These proteins are produced by abnormal plasma cells in certain conditions, such as multiple myeloma, Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, or other related blood disorders.

In this test, a blood sample is taken and analyzed to separate and identify different types of proteins, such as immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM, etc.) and light chains (kappa and lambda). If an abnormal protein is found, it helps doctors determine the type and amount, which is important for diagnosis and treatment planning.

Doctors usually recommend this test when patients show signs like bone pain, fatigue, frequent infections, anemia, kidney problems, or high total protein levels in the blood. It is often done along with other tests, like serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP), to get a clearer picture of the condition.
